Truck Mounted Cranes: Straight Boom Cranes Vs Knuckle Boom Cranes – Part 1

Truck mounted cranes are very versatile machines, utilized on many construction job sites. They are a unique combination of a truck with a crane mounted at the rear end. The truck mounted cranes are extremely efficient machines for lifting and moving heavy loads. The crane part is usually mounted on the cottage of the truck, which provides a greater flexibility. The truck mounted cranes are able to easily transport heavy loads from one location to another, an advantage preferred by many operators. Thanks to their flexibility and versatility, the truck mounted cranes are considered as the most efficient lifting equipment.

Truck mounted cranes are very practical, functional and mobile machines, and when equipped with the right crane attachments, they can improve the productivity in any construction process. To get the job done in the most efficient way, you need to choose the right configuration. There are two different configuration: straight boom cranes and knuckle boom cranes. Read on to find out features, applications and advantages of both types of truck mounted cranes.

Straight Boom Cranes

The straight boom crane has several operational features. The main part is the mother boom, which is one part only, unlike the knuckle boom cranes. It also consists of a telescopic boom that can be extended, and a winch mechanism as a standard feature (winch is an indicator of crane capacity). The straight boom cranes use a hook for the lifting operations, linked to a winch with a wire rope system. The hook is positioned at the end of the wire rope and is raised and lowered through the wire rope system. In some cases, the hook can be raised and lowered through a mother boom luffing.

The straight boom crane is very easy to operate with. However, every operator needs to be crane-skilled and attend different trainings frequently. The wire rope system makes it easier for the operators to make decisions, and plus the system provides a stable working environment. The wire rope system provides an extremely accurate and steady placement of the loads, because it makes one linear movement: up and down. The operators work easier with linear movements, especially for material handling operations. The straight boom cranes can be used as hose handling cranes for tankers, service cranes, boat cranes, etc.
